1. Identify your trigger - Certain situations can cause ruminative thoughts to resurface. Try to identify your triggers and then avoid it. Also try to recognize when you start ruminating. Like for example - when I see my ex I started ruminating about bad memories with her. You might also notice some specific pattern of thoughts.
2. Thought Diary - Whenever a thoughts came into your mind write it down, it will help you to realize the process of ruminating and regular practice will help you to comeback in your track. Now unless you do it you will not understand how effective is this. I know that you searched for solutions on the web . If you practice anyone of them at that time, then today you need not to ask me. Personally I write diary almost every day since age of 12. And I can effectively control my thoughts.
3. Walk 10 minutes in the presence of bright sunlight. It helps to maintain our normal biological clock. Sunlight is 5 to 10 times brighter than our indoor light and it turns out that our body need sunlight in order to set our circadian rhythms right. And biological clock helps you to maintain hormone regulation, time for sleep, time to feel energetic, any change in normal biological clock leads us to stress, depression which is one of the main causes of overthinking. Imagine if you feel tired all of the day and when night comes you cannot sleep well. These are the common problems happening with you. If you sleep well at night I think 50 % problem will be solved.
4. Choose a time to ruminate - Most of the people who ruminate can spend hours at a time over analysis a problem even after they have find a effective solution. What I do is — I start ruminating for 10 to - 20 minutes before sleep, because after a limit I fall asleep . But at the same time some people can’t sleep, my advice is exercise as much possible so that you fall asleep within few minutes.
5. De-active amygdala - When you start ruminating negative thoughts you get into panic mode. If you notice it - then you might notice that your breath gets short, your heart start pounding, or you feel dizzy. Now if at that time you start inhaling more air, your breathing rates again become normal, and you stop ruminating.
6.  Distract Yourself - when ever you will feel that you are ruminating instantly start talking with friends, partner, parents or other people.
7. Listen some relaxing music, watch a funny movie.
8. Help others- If you help others then a positivity will grow in your mind, which will surely prevent the ruminative negative thoughts.
9. And here is the most effective solution

According to the National Science Foundation, an average person has about 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day. Of those, 80% are negative and 95% are repetitive thoughts. So we need to focus on reducing negative thoughts.

And why negative thoughts arise?? it arises because we show bad behavior, we do bad things when we get angry.

We have some beliefs and we got stuck with that belief, and if someone gives a question mark on our belief, we start to get angry. The easiest way to fight with anger is to leave that belief.

Now the question is that then from where these beliefs came into us. These beliefs are from the loneliness inside us. But we can get rid of loneliness when we understand that nothing except you is perfect.

Your perfection is equal to infinity. Now it doesn’t matter what we lose or what we get or what we own because the amount is infinity. When you will understand the hidden meaning, the problem will be solved.
